Benzoyl Peroxide - An Allergy Risk?

By Barry Crewse

One of the many questions I get lately is: "Should I be afraid of an allergic reaction to benzoyl peroxide." Good question! This product has been used for decades and is available over the counter. So, inquiring minds want to know!

Ok. Let's talk a little bit about benzoyl peroxide. It's a great product so lets check it out. Benzoyl peroxide, Resorcinol, salicylic acid and sulfur are all FDA approved over the counter active ingredients designed particularly to fight your acne. They all work quite well. Benzoyl peroxide should be generally thought of as an antibiotic of sorts which is topically applied as an acne treatment. It is rated just below the number one treatment, oral tetracycline in it's effectiveness.

The "benzoyl" part acts like a propellant for the "peroxide" to get deep into the follicle where it releases oxygen that effectively kills the Anaerobic Acne P. bacteria. This is the bacteria that is specifically responsible for causing all the pain and suffering you experience from acne lesions. Anaerobic just means that the Acne P. bacteria cannot survive in an environment that is rich in oxygen. Oxygen is what we what then!

Keep in mind that since your body provides the living quarters and food for the bacteria to survive, you can pick a treatment designed to follow suit. There are products such as Retin-A, azelaic acid or glycolic acid (consult your physician on these) that will actually help clear the follicle and prevent unsuitable living quarters. A product such as benzoyl peroxide actually kills off the bacteria thereby keeping the them in check or even eliminating the breakouts altogether. If you are using the topical antibacterial method in fighting your acne you must remain diligent. Missing even a day or two can result in a whole new onslaught of acne by allowing the bacteria to regroup. You don't want that to happen. One of the really great attributes of benzoyl peroxide is that the bacteria cannot become resistant to the treatment. Where there is oxygen, they will die. This is the "toxic" effect it has on the bacteria rather than a "true" antibiotic effect. Because of this the bacteria cannot develop resistance to it.

It is also a great anti-inflammatory preparation which also helps to reduce swelling and redness associated with it. This is of course unless you are hypersensitive to the product. That is not the same as an allergy and I will discuss that in another article. Depending on the severity of your acne outbreak, it could take weeks or even a couple of months for improvement to occur so don't give up! Just use the product as directed.

Now, let me ask you a question. Do you really think you can eliminate your acne overnight buy some of the "miracle" products I see selling all over the net? Huh? Come on people. Don't buy into that scam.

Now that we have defined exactly what and how benzoyl peroxide works lets talk about the side effects just briefly.

If you use a very high concentration of benzoyl peroxide you may experience very dry, red or scaly skin. This will also happen if you apply it way more often than is necessary. Now, if these type of symptoms become severe it may signal an allergic reaction to the product. Allergic reaction of this type will usually include some swelling and itching and most probably some tenderness of the affected area. If that should occur try using an over the counter hydro cortisone based cream. This usually works wonders in counteracting minor allergic reactions.

Overall clinical studies have shown that less than one percent of the population actually shows any type of contact sensitization to benzoyl peroxide over time. It has been proven to be one of the most effective acne treatment there is and these tests have occurred over many decades. That doesn't mean that you cannot be that one person who does experience some type of reaction. So, be aware of how the product is working for you. If you do experience swelling or severe crusting of your skin after using benzoyl peroxide discontinue it's use and consult your physician. There are many other products you can try and something will work for you.

Hope this answers your question on this topic. Stay tuned as my next post will deal more specifically on the long term effects of benzoyl peroxide. If you have suffered from acne for many years you need to be aware of the latest finding on long term use.

Benzoyl Peroxide - Is It Safe Long Term?

By Barry Crewse

As in many of my previous posts I have discussed the many complications of treating acne. One of the most prominent of these complications is

the length of time in which many individuals must endure the treatment and medications of battling their acne problems. The course of suppression may continue many years beyond being a teenager and because of this consideration should be taken in not only how well the treatment works but also the long term effects of that treatment.

The safety of benzoyl peroxide hit national debate in the early 1980's. At that time the long term side effects due to it's use became better known. Although the FDA reported that the medication was safe to use the fact that this product produces what is known as "free radicals" was cause for alarm. We have long known that free radicals can in fact be responsible as a possible link in the cause of cancer.

There have been literally hundreds of reports generated over the years by various medical publications that have done research concerning this product as a link to cancer risk. Many of them appear to support this risk albeit mainly in theory. Nevertheless, in 1995 the FDA changed their position in categorizing the safety of benzoyl peroxide from a level 1 to level 3 category "safety unknown." Research done on laboratory mice and hamsters raised concern that benzoyl peroxide may be a tumor promoter in these animals.

It is important to remember that the amounts administered and the time in which these amounts were allowed to be in contact with these creatures does not necessarily mirror that type of use in humans. This brings back the great cyclamates debate of the 1970's in which rats were given huge amounts of the artificial sweetener promoting warnings as a possible cancer causing agent. These warnings were later dismissed as it was highly improbable that people would drink an equivalent amount of 50 cans of soda a day over many years to reach the minimal amount of sweetener given to the lab rats. It is not known proportionally how much exposure to benzoyl peroxide is needed to actually become a cancer risk.

When talking about long term side effects it is important to remember that there are many products available to treat acne. Of all the long term side effects reportedly associated with these medications, benzoyl peroxide appears to be one of the safest products among them. Unlike antibiotic medications, resistance by the bacteria that cause acne cannot be developed. Because benzoyl peroxide is a applied topically, there is no risk to any internal organs as there might be associated with medication which would have to be taken orally. The medication comes in variable strengths which allows you to use only that concentration that helps suppression of your acne outbreak.

In 1991 a study was conducted by the University of Miami to weight the associated risks of using benzoyl peroxide. That study indicated no known risks of skin cancer by those using the product as an acne treatment. Skin color, nationality and family history of skin cancer were the risk factors used in the determination. It is interesting to note that those who seem to raise the biggest questions concerning benzoyl peroxide are usually those who are marketing products that do not contain it. This does not mean that risks do not exist.

There are many opinions, theories and myths circulating when it comes to treating acne. Being an educated consumer will help you make the best decisions concerning which course of medication is best for you.

Talk candidly with your physician about your choices. Spend a little time doing some research on all the remedies available for fighting your acne. Make sure you are comfortable with your decisions and you are well on your way to achieving the beautiful skin you deserve.

How To Get Rid Of Acne Overnight

This is only an Ideas

Divulging adolescent’s stepping into adulthood the acne authenticates a hormonal changes taking place in the body of boys and girls. You are being fooled provided you are imparted tips on how to get rid of acne overnight.

Acne is not a bubble of water which you can burst within no time. Growing over the skin the acnes happen to be tenacious by their nature and bumpy by their entity. And being hard enough they cant be dealt with as easily as any one may expect them to be. Any step taken in haste by the affected ones have got to exacerbate the acne problem which at the latter stage may covert into acne scars, which in its own self is a pugnacious complication for the affected ones to tame.

Once your facial skin is occupied by acne, it will require on your part a great patience and an effort to deal with the acne problem. Acne occurs naturally over the skin so does it go away as well on its own. But its unwanted emergence, spoiling whole complexion of teenagers, call for effective ways to get rid of unwanted acnes as soon as possible.

Before revealing you how to get rid of your acne problem, the factors causing acne are needed to be highlighted. Acne occurs due only to changes in the structure of our skin, consisting of a hair follicle and sebaceous gland. The acne causes inflammation even on mildly being touched by the individual.

Being a natural syndrome of hormonal changes in the teenagers(12 to 16 years of age) the acne surfaces over the facial skin prior to their puberty and may continue even into adulthood as well. Though an acne fades spontaneously with the passage of time by early twenties of an individual, it may exist over the skin by thirties, forties and beyond, depending upon the condition of respective person’s skin.

Apart from affecting facial skin, the acne may affect chest, back and shoulders as well. There are different types of acnes like comedones, inflammatory papules, pustules and nodules. The acnes being larger in size and shape are  known as cysts as well.

Getting yourself acquainted with the facts regarding acnes, would you still like to be misguided and seek to get rid of acne problem overnight? Shed the idea of getting yourself rid of acne overnight as the time and patience are prerequisites to deal with acnes and remove them from skin with success. Those affected from acne rather should muster the courage and have a patience while yearning to get rid of their acne problem.

  • Welcome Acne- Hate causes stress, anxiety and frustration which, as result, has got to render all of your attempts to deal with your acne futile. As the acne forecasts something unique awaiting in your life, you should reciprocate to it without any hate.[Acne confirms of an adulthood, a teenager is to step into.]

  • Keep Acne Clean- Wash your face with moisture-containing mild soap or face wash many times a day. [Make sure that skin is not parched]
  • Avoid Applying Oily Cream.
  • Apply Lemon Juice- Squeeze out the lemon juice in a small plate and apply it all over the acne-affected skin in the night before heading for sleep. Wash it next day in the morning with a Luke warm water without using soap or face-wash.
  • Drink Plenty Of Water.
  • Benzoyl Peroxide Cream- Apply over the acne affected facial skin benzoyl peroxide-containing ointment. Initially you may experience some irritation and sensation which, within a less than a week, will disappear and help you get rid of your acne problem easily.
  • Have Antibiotic Drugs- Being an effective substance to remove the acnes too fast, the antibiotic drugs exterminate the bacterias that cause infection and develop acnes all over the skin. Being too effective to fight with infections caused by microorganisms, including fungi and protozoa, such antibiotic drugs will help you get rid of your acnes sooner and faster.
  • Azelaic Acid- A saturated dicarboxylic acid found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley, the Azelaic acid shrivels the acnes efficiently. Made of Malassezia fur-fur (aka Pityrosporum ovale), the Azelaic acid is a yeast found over the natural skin. It is very effective to treat the acne problem. Apply it over the acnes and see the result within a week.
  • Keratolytic And Comedolytic- It resuscitates the acne affected skin by inhibiting the bacterias and drying the acnes. Its unique property of shriveling the acnes and fading pigmentation of skin helps the affected ones get rid of acne problem easily.
  • Salicylic Acid- Being colorless, the salicylic acid is derived from the metabolism of salicin and can be used as anti-acne treatments.

Benzoyl Peroxide Pimple Treatment

Pimple Treatment

By Charles S. Spencer

Most of the time, when we talk about medication to treat acne, we are going to hear a lot of people say about the effectiveness and benefits of benzoyl peroxide. True, it is very effective on mild to moderate and even severe acne condition. It is undoubtedly the most popular and effective topical acne medication. Personally, I have had a lot of positive experience with benzoyl peroxide. Even the hyped up and heavily advertised Proactiv Solution's main ingredient is benzoyl peroxide. So this article serves my goal to let you know more information about this medical treatment option so that you can make knowledgeable actions in treating your acne.

There are so many forms of Benzoyl peroxide products in the market. So how do you choose them?

For your information, do not buy any cleanser that claims to cure your acne. Any cleanser alone is not effective on acne because of the time the cleansing foam stays on your skin. The time is just not long enough for the active ingredients to react with your skin. For this reason, it is better to have a deep cleansing cleanser that lets your skin feel fresh and clean.

If you are treating acne with this active ingredient, make sure you choose cream form. For best results, use acne treatment products that combine salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide together. Salicylic acid is believed to help with the effects and absorption of benzoyl peroxide.

How to use benzoyl peroxide to treat acne?

Make sure you wash your face with a facial cleanser that suits your skin type before applying benzoyl peroxide on your face so that your skin can absorb more of the medication. Apply twice, in the morning and before going to bed.

Side effects:

1. Overuse may result in redness, dryness, and irritation. Take note that this medicine is considered to be quite strong for your skin. Use it accordingly.

2. It will increase sensitivity of your skin to sun. In other words, after using too much benzoyl peroxide on your skin, your skin might get irritated and burnt if you are exposed to the sun for a long period of time. Solution for this is to apply sunscreen whenever you are outdoor.

Stop medication if severe redness, irritation, rashes occur. Consult your doctor for other treatment alternatives.

Benzoyl peroxide is one of the most effective acne medication around. If you use it accordingly to the instructions, you can really expect to see improvements in several days.

Best Natural Acne Treatment

What Exactly is Acne?

Acne is a skin condition that involves the hair and oil glands. It is basically plugged pores. These are commonly known as blackheads, whiteheads or pimples. They occur mainly on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and upper arms but can occur anywhere on the body. Hair follicles, often called pores, get blocked with sebum (oil), which normally drains to the surface, and a bacteria begins to grow. Both whiteheads and blackheads start out as a “microcomedone” which then become skin blemishes called comedones. Acne can be upsetting, disfiguring, sometimes even leading to permanent scarring.

Thinking acne is a minor problem, some people tend to totally discard the topic of acne prevention. However, the importance of acne prevention should not be overlooked.

Acne Prevention Starts before an Outbreak

Acne prevention can and should really start much before the acne actually appears. Prevention is more about being proactive than reactive. It starts with following daily skin care routines with complete discipline.

Acne prevention starts with being clean. A hot morning shower is one of the most effective ways of keeping the skin clean. A shower before bed is a good idea also (it not only helps in keeping your skin clean but also relaxes your body for a good sleep.) If you are living in a hot and/or humid area, frequent showers are a must. Showers are the first and most effective acne prevention method.

However, while important, showers are often not enough all by themselves. Wearing clean clothes and sleeping on clean sheets and pillows can go a long way toward acne prevention. Loose clothes are good also because tight clothes can cause sweat to accumulate quickly. Comfortable cotton clothes are recommended.

Don’t forget to frequently clean or change your brushes, wash rags and any other grooming item you use on your body.

The Most Effective and Best Natural Acne Treatment

Always use a mild, water-soluble, soap-free and oil-free cleanser for keeping your face, neck and arms clean. This is the most important part of any acne prevention routine particularly in teenagers and those prone to outbreaks. A good face cleaner is the easiest and the most effective way of removing dirt, grease, pollutants and excess oil from your skin and unblocking your pores. It is also recommended that you remove your makeup using a make up remover before you go to bed (not in the morning.)

If you have an outbreak, do not try to squeeze the pimples. This can lead to permanent scars. Continue to practice your acne prevention routine of gentle cleansing and cleaning of the affected area using an over-the-counter medication and a clean/soft cotton pad. There are many good acne prevention creams and lotions available (a lot of these acne prevention products are actually cleansers).

If your acne prevention does not work and you have an severe outbreak, you may need to seek further more aggressive treatments.

Acne Treatment Solutions for Adult

Are you experiencing acne problems? Many adults are dealing with acne problems.

Based on the most recent survey, 75 percent of teenagers and young adults suffer from acne. Adults who are on their 30s and 40s can also experience acne problems.

When spots and black heads grow on your face, it only indicates that there is an over activity on the oil glands.

Acne is a skin condition that usually happens when the sebaceous glands, which are oil producing glands, secrete excess oil in some parts of the body. Sebaceous glands are found mostly on your face.

Adults with acne may experience having blackheads, which are caused by the blocking of the pores. The darkening of the portions of the skin is caused by the excess skin pigments secreted by the oil glands.

Whiteheads are also common to people suffering from acne. It occurs near the surface of the skin when the excess oil is blocked inside the follicle.

There are simple solutions on how you can treat acne properly and safely. First, you should understand what causes acne.

Bacterial growth and too much inflammation of the oil glands is one main reason why an adult can suffer from acne.

The main factors that contribute to acne also include bacterial growth, increase of oil secretion, and changes inside the hair follicles and hormones that affect the sebaceous glands in secreting oil.

To treat acne, you should know how to consistently and persistently follow simple directions on how you can easily treat acne.

Here are some simple solutions that will help you treat your acne problems.

1.Go to a dermatologist.

A dermatologist can provide you simple solutions for your acne. Your treatment may depend on your skin type, medical history and your age.

2.Take medications.

There are antibiotics and vitamin A derivatives and other acne drug products that are available from over the counter stores. Make sure that they will not irritate your skin by consulting a dermatologist.

3.Always be clean.

Always keep spot prone portions of your face clean. It is recommended to wash the affected portions twice or thrice a day with antibacterial skin soaps.

4.Avoid the temptation.

Refrain from pricking the spots. Squeezing can cause scarring to the face. The dirt on your hands might also cause infection to acne wounds.

5.Take benzoyl peroxide.

You may buy over the counter acne treatment products that contain benzoyl peroxide. For serious acne problems, you can buy topical skin solutions and tablet intake antibiotics.

6.Prevention is the acne treatment for adults.

Use non comedogenic solutions such as sunscreen, foundations, make ups, moisturizers and lotions that have medicated solutions for acne. These products can help in blocking the pores and prevent acne.

These effective methods can help you treat and prevent acne. Consult your acne problems with a dermatologist so that you can know the best solutions available for you. Avoid scrubbing and vigorous washing to your face. This may cause even worse acne problems.

Acne is curable. Take actions immediately and begin with individualized treatment program. Soon you will have a great feeling looking at the mirror and admiring your clean and acne-free face.

Acne Treatment

Acne Review Treatment - The New Face Of Benzoyl Peroxide

By Rebecca Prescott

One of the problems with benzoyl peroxide topical acne treatments is that they can be quite irritating, particularly to sensitive skin. Those fans of benzoyl peroxide will thus be pleased to learn that one skin care company that supplies prescription acne and skin care products is releasing a treatment with a delivery system that reduces benzoyl peroxide's irritating effect.

Called NeoBenz Micro, this acne treatment will be available only by prescription, which is one drawback. On the plus side, it should mean that the acne sufferer is given the appropriate strength to their particular needs. It is aimed at helping people with mild to moderate acne, and comes in three strengths. These are 3.5% benzoyl peroxide, 5.5% benzoyl peroxide, and 8.5% benzoyl peroxide.

The difference in this treatment as compared to regular benzoyl peroxide solutions, is that it is a time release product. The method designed by SkinMedica, NeoBenz Micro's developer, uses very small 'sponges', called microsponges. These hold the active ingredient, in this case benzoyl peroxide, to be slowly released throughout the day. It means that though acne is kept in contact with benzoyl peroxide for the whole day, only small amounts of it are released onto the skin. These amounts are enough to be effective but far less irritating.

The side effects that this benzoyl peroxide acne treatment aims at reducing are rashes, skin soreness, and irritation. Aside from the unpleasant feeling these effects create, they unfortunately also reduce the effectiveness of benzoyl peroxide in clearing acne.

NeoBenz Micro is one example of a new trend in the pharmaceutical industry. It aims at taking existing products and developing new ways to package and deliver the active ingredients, thus effectively modernizing many treatments. The emphasis in the past had been more research oriented - finding new and more powerful treatments rather than fine tuning existing ones that were proven to work.

Other examples of this phenomena include converting treatments into sprays, with the effect of increasing absorption and convenience. MedPharm, a research contracting firm, is turning one eczema treatment and two acne treatments into sprays. These are still in the development stage, however.

Different Types of Adult Acne Treatments, Which Acne Condition Do You Have?

By D. Grace

Some people do not know that there actually three types of acne conditions that affect millions of lives everyday, and they are: A) Mild B) Moderate and C) Severe. All three will need to be treated before matters get worse, which leads to the severe conditions of acne. If you find that your acne is in the mild stage, then you can provide simple solutions to prevent further outbreaks by washing your face or body area with luke warm water. Then apply a topical cream that can be purchased over the counter at a local pharmacy or drugstore; as such creams like Salicylic Acid or Benzoyl Peroxide.

If you show signs of moderate acne, then this is when you would want to move forward with seeking professional help with a dermatologist. Moderate acne covers approximately fifty percent of your face and/or body. It is not yet considered the severe stage, but if you act on it now, you can prevent that from happening. Visit a dermatologist so that you can have proper testing done on your skin and get prescribed medications specific to help combat your moderate acne problem. You can expect to receive treatments such as oral meds or topical ointments. There’s also a “blue light therapy” treatment that is suppose to help fight acne prone skin as well.

The severe stage of acne is the worst stage. The severe stages of acne covers over fifty percent of your face and or your body (legs, back, arms, chest, etc..). The severe type of acne usually always leave deep and permanent scarring to the skin tissue. Severe acne resembles a inflamed puss like cyst that hurts even if you try to smile, and is very very uncomfortable. Seeking treatment immediatly would be your best option, and by doing so will prevent further skin damage and scarring.

Although acne is most common on the face area, acne also can appear on other body parts. Acne can be a problem in most areas like the neck, back, face and arms. Study show that these are the main body parts in which acne occurs and if left untreated can do physical damage to the skin.

Using over the counter topical acne treatments such as Benzoyl Peroxide can effectively help reduce acne prone areas in most cases. You can pick up a bottle of Benzoyl at your local pharmacy or drug store. It comes in a couple of strength levels ranging from 2.5 or higher. With the use of topical medicines like Bonzoyl Peroxide, it can treat mild to sometimes moderate acne. It helps reduce sebaceous glands and unclog blocked pores.

Most acne problems can be cured with the use of a topical cream called Retonoid. It is known for attacking and getting rid of black heads, white heads and even comedonal acne. But no over the counter medicine can not top a prescribed acne fighting solution provided by the doctor. Such prescribed treatments like Tretinoin, Accutane and Menocyline help combat and fight acne down to the core.

Another treatment being used is called a “home made” method, the chemical peel. Though it may work for some, but not so well with others, in this case, seeking a professional would be the wiser of the two. Or how about trying it “natures way”? The natural treatment should always be included in your daily routine and lifestyle, such as getting plenty of rest at night, eating healthy and nutritional balanced meals and of course, excercise!

Acne Remedy

Home Acne Treatment to End Your Acne Worries

To achieve a true acne remedy, a number of factors can come into play. The acne sufferer will often begin acne treatment by using natural remedies. If successful, more stringent and expensive remedies will be unneeded.
When an individual is looking for an acne remedy, it is fairly common to progress through the available home acne treatment before moving up to more specialized options. Even if the remedies are carried out at home, the acne sufferer should consult with a dermatologist for diagnosis and a recommended course of treatment before commencing. Not all blemishes are acne, and only the dermatologist can identify the cause and preferred treatment options for the condition. Under the doctor’s care, some or all of the home treatments for acne are certain to assist in improving the appearance of the skin and preventing return of the eruptions.

Salicylic acid cleanser
A salicylic acid cleanser is an important component in an acne remedy. You can use this product as part of a program that includes cleansing of the skin. Using salicylic acid as a cleansing agent. You can find these products by checking the label. Salicylic acid is chemically related to and reacts similarly to the effective compounds found in aspirin. The ingredient is found as part of the inner bark of the willow tree. It is found in many skin care products. It works by causing the skin cells to shed off more readily so that the pores don’t clog. This allows the new cells to have room to grow.

Avoid scrubbing
Acne blemishes do not require rough scrubbing of the skin in order to reduce the size and number of imperfections. In fact, scrubbing irritates the outer layer of the skin even further and may lead to open lesions which lead to infection. Contrary to popular belief, scrubbing does not break up the bacteria and sebum pockets in and around the follicle. The best acne treatment to reduce the size of the lesions and the frequency of them is to treat with topical creams and lotions containing vitamin A based products. Acne is not a disease caused by dirt.

Use a mild soap
Cleansing of acne challenged skin is important even though just cleansing the skin won’t provide a complete acne remedy for the person fighting for clear skin. Try wetting your face with warm water and then using a mild soap to gently work up a lather. A light circular motion with the tips of the fingers will provide cleansing plus a mild massage. Stimulation of the blood flow to the area will help to fight the bacteria as well. Be sure to rinse all remnants of the soap from the skin in order to prevent drying.

Smooth on benzoyl peroxide lotion
The final step in the acne remedy during the home acne treatment is to smooth on benzoyl peroxide lotion. The lotion is great for moisturizing the skin without that greasy feeling that is so unpleasant. The benzoyl peroxide lotion continues to fight the growth of bacteria on your skin throughout the entire day. The softening qualities of the lotion help to reduce that tight and painful feeling of the skin while fighting the bacteria that are a contributing factor to acne.

Best Acne Treatment

Some of the solution for acne problems

A lot of people have to go through the trouble of finding effective solutions to their acne problems. Acne is easily the most common skin problems affecting everyone and all age groups. It is not an emerging problem by adolescents as even adults are experiencing the same skin problem. There is the compelling reason why we need to find the best acne treatment.

The more tried and tested solutions to acne and other skin breakouts include hormonal therapy, natural acne treatment and bactericidal.

Best Acne TreatmentA lot of people resort to topical bactericidal cream in treating their acne problem. The active ingredient of this bactericidal treatment is the chemical benzoyl peroxide. It is essentially an oxidizer and functions as mild bleach. It resolves the skin problem by acting on the keratin that blocks the pores of the skin. This type of acne treatment also prevents skin breakouts. This bactericidal treatment is also available as a wash treatment.

Natural acne treatment and home remedies are getting popular nowadays. There are several known types of this acne treatment which we can actually try for ourselves. The more popular natural acne treatments include Witch Hazel and Tea Tree Oil. The Tea Tree Oil comes from the leaves of Melaleuxa alternifolia and acts as an anti-bacterial agent in controlling skin acne. On the other hand, Witch Hazel is used as natural astringent on the affected part of the skin and has an above standard safety profile that allows us to use it as a natural treatment for very sensitive skin. Other natural treatments for acne include Lavender oils, Bergamot and rosewood oil.

Hormonal treatments are the preferred option for women with serious acne problems. The treatment regimen primarily involves the balancing of the person’s hormonal levels to manage the intensity and frequency of acne incidence. The birth control pills are known to have secondary effect of reducing the incidence and intensity of acne problems by women who regularly take them. Its effect is directly associated with the action of progesterone and estrogen on skin acne. Significant positive results are mostly observed in women who have particularly high levels of androgen in their bloodstream. However, it is essential that you get clearance from your doctor before taking contraceptive pills.

Among the three most common acne treatments today, bactericidal acne treatments are the most popular option. On the other hand, we are observing a consistent increase in the use of natural remedies to control skin acne. It is important that in your search for the best acne treatment, you should consider all the underlying factors that may have direct effect on your acne problem.

What is Benzoyl Peroxide?

Thing You Should Know About Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide is a common over the counter topical medication used to treat acne.

It's believed that this compound works by destroying the bacteria associated with acne. It usually takes at least four weeks to work and it must be used continuously to keep acne at bay until you outgrow benzoyl peroxide getting acne. This is because it does not affect sebum production or the way the skin follicle cells are shed, and when you stop using it, the acne comes back. It is available in a wide range of vehicles: creams, lotions, and gels.

So "How does it get rid of dark spots?"

There seems to be some debate if benzoyl peroxide actually lightens dark spots.  Acne medications that can have a drying effect on the skin, such as benzoyl peroxide, should only be used under the supervision of a dermatologist as these medications may irritate the skin and prolong post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in some cases. Benzoyl peroxide can also decolorize skin.

Acne Treatment

How Benzoyl Peroxide works

Before we go into details on how benzoyl peroxide can prevent acne, it is useful to understand how acne is formed. Propionibacterium acnes (P.acnes) is a bacteria that causes the skin disorder acne. P.acnes is a major inhabitant of human skin and is the causative agent of acne. This skin-dwelling organism will multiply rapidly within clogged sebaceous follicles if left untreated. Fortunately, these bacteria cannot live in the presence of oxygen. Benzoyl Peroxide is an oxygen-releasing chemical in the organic peroxide family. Upon applying on the affected area, this chemical is absorbed into the pores and releases the oxygen to destroy P.acnes.

Side Effects of Benzoyl Peroxide

It is important to note that there are some side effects when using this anti-acne medication:

a. Dryness

If you are using 5% or 10% of benzoyl peroxide, you may want to try a lower concentration, say 2.5% of benzoyl peroxide.

b. Irritation

For irritation, you can reduce the usage frequency. If you encounter severe irritation even the usage frequency is low, you should discontinue using the product.

c. Allergy

If you are allergic to Benzoyl Peroxide, you should discontinue using it and consult your dermatologist for other acne treatments.

d. Bleach

Benzoyl Peroxide is a powerful bleaching agent. You should prevent your hair from contacting this bleaching agent as this medicine can cause permanent color dampening.

Before using Benzoyl Peroxide for your acne treatment, please take note that this medicine generates free radicals in the skin. The result is redness of the skin due to oxidative stress. The effect is similar to unprotected sun exposure. If you are using a benzoyl peroxide product to treat your acne, you should avoid unnecessary sun exposure and use a sunscreen during the day.

Acne Home Treatment

Acne Home Treatment - Benzoyl Peroxide is a Magnificent Aid in Fighting Acne

There are many treatments for acne available today, but the most commonly used treatment includes benzoyl peroxide. Many over-the-counter acne medications include benzoyl peroxide, however, the side affects may include dry, flaky and red skin.

Many people visit a dermatologist to have their acne treated. In some cases the dermatologist may prescribe tetracycline pills or other oral medications. However, many acne suffers find that benzoyl peroxide-based acne home treatments have better results with fewer side affects.

Benzoyl peroxide will cause a peeling of the inside of a pore, killing the bacteria that reside there. Also, when benzoyl peroxide touches the skin's surface it will bubble up releasing oxygen which kills bacteria. Bacteria which cause acne cannot survive in the presence of the type of oxygen that is generated by benzoyl peroxide.

Many acne sufferers are under the misconception that they only need to use benzoyl peroxide to spot treat acne. What you may fail to realize is bacteria is all over your facial skin's surface. Acne is in the development stage at all times. It may take weeks for acne to develop to the point you can actually see a lesion. It is important to use benzoyl peroxide all over your face to stop the invisible bacteria from forming future acne breakouts.

Avoid applying any treatment creams too close to the eye area as it is very sensitive. Benzoyl peroxide can irritate the eye area and cause your eyelids to temporarily swell. Wash your hands before putting contacts into your eyes after applying the treatment.

Don't forget to treat your neck, chest and back area. Applying a preventative layer of benzoyl peroxide in these places will prevent future acne breakouts in these areas.

How you apply benzoyl peroxide is also critical. It is something that you start slowly and build up over time. Begin by leaving it on your skin for an hour, then two, four and so on. Many people leave it on overnight when they first purchase it, and when they wake up they see red, dry and flakey skin. Most people need to start slowly. It is much like going out in the sun when you have not been out in months. You would begin with a good sunscreen and would increase your time outside gradually so you would not burn your skin. You may also want to try applying benzoyl peroxide every other day for starters.

Following up your treatment with a good moisturizer that is water-based is also very important. You want to make sure that you are creating the right environment for your skin to look very healthy and glowing.

Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Treatment

Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Treatment - The What, Why and Direction for Use

What is Benzoyl Peroxide?

Benzoyl peroxide is a vital chemical ingredient in numerous over-the-counter topical products for treating acne. As a matter of fact, it is one of the most recommended and widely used acne treatments.

Benzoyl peroxide is made available in gels, creams, lotions, and cleansers. It is an economical treatment, frequently used by acne sufferers. Benzoyl peroxide is the initial treatment of mild to moderate acne.

Why Use Benzoly Peroxide?

Benzoyl peroxide primarily works as an oxidizing agent, which allows oxygen to penetrate through the pores and into the skin, creating an oxygen-rich (aerobic) environment. Hence, Benzoyl peroxide is an antiseptic as it indirectly kills Propionibacterium acnes - the culprit for acne outbreaks. As this medication reduces the quantity of bacteria on the surface of skin, it does not however trigger bacterial resistance or adverse reaction to antibiotics. Moreover, Benzoyl peroxide also deters the multiplication of yeasts on the skin.

These bacteria cannot survive in such aerobic surrounding. Consequently, the reduction on the number of bacteria also reduces the occurrence of acne outbreaks. Additionally, as an oxidizing agent, Benzoyl peroxide dries off the thickened fluid or sebum and helps in alleviating the clogged pores so the acne lesions may heal without causing trauma (caused by squeezing or popping out the acne) to the affected area.

Benzoyl peroxide also acts as an anti-inflammatory medication that reduces the swelling and inflammation of infected pustules and papules, thus relieving the individual from the tenderness and soreness brought about by acne breakouts. This acne treatment medication is most effective when used with an exfoliator that also has Bezoyl peroxide content.

Benzoyl peroxide is also especially effective because it can help clear the follicle of excess cellular debris, minimizing the possibility of clogged pores, or comedones.

Just like antibiotics, Benzoyl Peroxide must be continuously used, even after the symptoms (acne) disappear. Stopping the treatment on the wrong time may exacerbate the condition. To determine the duration of Benzoyl Peroxide usage, your dermatologist is the best person to seek for consultation. The length of time that the treatment should be continued primarily depends on the severity and extent of acne.

Direction for using Benzoyl Peroxide

The skin must be thoroughly washed and dried before applying a fine coating of Benzoyl Peroxide on the affected skin areas. This can be done 1 to 2 times everyday.

Benzoyl Peroxide can bleach hair, clothing, and towels. Thus, the medication should not touch these materials right after application. Rather, allow the medication to dry completely to prevent bleaching your clothes, pillowcases, towels, and the like.

Benzoyl Peroxide, like any other medications, also has some side effects. Effects that generally do not need medical attention include dryness, mild burning, flaking, and photosensitivity. However, if these side effects worsen, or swelling or crusting occurs, medical help should immediately be sought. Although following the package insert directions, or the instructions from your dermatologist can help reduce the possibility of unwanted side effects.

Benzoyl Peroxide is indeed considered to have a magical touch, especially for those who are suffering from worse acne condition. But for it to become as effective as it should be, certain precautions must be considered and specific directions must be followed.
